HISTORICAL
NOTE
The Rev. Arthur W. H. Eaton (1849-1937) was a resident of Kentville,
Nova Scotia, who moved to Boston in 1873 to complete his education. He
served as an Episcopal deacon and priest in Indiana, New York and
Massachusetts, as well as teaching English literature at the Cutler
School in New York. Popular with his students, Eaton’s former pupils
often addressed him as “Pa” or “Father”. He was also an amateur
historian who successfully addressed himself to a wide range of topics.
These included theology, genealogy, biography, local history and poetry.
SCOPE
AND CONTENT
The collection was compiled during the period 1871-1927. Much of it
concerns Nova Scotia and its settlers, particularly those referred to
as Planters and Loyalists. Genealogical notes, correspondence and
exhaustive vital record transcripts make up most of the collection,
particularly on the subjects of Kings and Hants counties. Judge Alfred
W. Savary (1831- ) was a favorite correspondent
in these researches, supplying Eaton with information and suggestions.
In addition to his genealogical and biographical papers, the collection
holds material from Eaton’s successful works on the Anglican Church in
Nova Scotia and the country’s heritage of verse and lyrics.
Eaton’s church activities appear through correspondence with Phillips
Brooks (1835-1893), Richard H. Newton (1840-1914), and William W.
Newton (1843-1914). Eaton’s tenture as an educator at the Cutler School
is marked by numerous letters from former students, describing their
successes or failures with university examinations. Representing New
York’s best families of the 1890’s, the students included Gallatins,
Grants, Livermores, and Bullards. Equally interesting are the
scattering of letters and evaluations provided by the schools to which
the boys allied.
In general, the private Eaton papers consist of social correspondence
between 1880 and 1891 while Eaton was in New York. Parts are
disappointingly lacking in substance, such as that from Mrs. Elizabeth
B. Custer (d. 1933). Others hold greater promise of historical
interest, particularly the poet William O. Partridge (1861-1930). In
addition, there is a small collection of papers relating to Wyatt
Eaton, the portraitist (1849-1896). Of special interest is his diary
for 1867, the year he gave up carriage painting to study portraiture.
